Now The Real Problems Begin - Legend of Korra, Book 2, Episode 9

We start with Jinora playing with neon-colored, winged rabbits.  And I think, I want one of those.

Never boring, don't need feeding

But that thought quickly fades as the action begins almost immediately with Korra showing up at the Eastern Air Temple to crash the family vacation and inform Tenzin of Unalaq's real plans.  Tenzin, who has been relaxing without the news for a while, needs quite a bit of catching up from Korra, who confesses how naive she was to trust Unalaq.  Pointing out that Unalaq must bear responsibility for his deception of Korra, Tenzin immediately decides to help Korra, but how?

Okay, I'm back, let's get to saving the world!

Unalaq controls the South Pole portal to the Spirit World, and now that portal must be closed to prevent the harmonic convergence.  But with the South Pole guarded, how to access it?  Why not access it by getting to the spirit world directly, without using a portal?  The Avatar is supposed to be able to do that, right?  Tenzin is ecstatic with that plan - he's been studying the spirit world and practices to access it for most of his life, and now is his big chance to use his research. Trouble is, none of it works, and Tenzin has to confess to Korra, brother Bumi, and Sister Kya that he's never actually been to the spirit world.  Tenzin is embarrassed, as he feels he is a disappointment to his father if he can't actually enter the Spirit World.  Bumi and Kya, used to disappointing Aang, just laugh at him and welcome him to the club.

Unalaq is also on his own, completely unsuccessful quest - he will try to re-open the North Pole portal with his and his kids', Eska and Desna, combined water bending.  However, they completely fail and Unalaq's son, Desna, has to be carried out of there.

Bolin is still playing Nuktuk, Hero of the South, to drum up sympathy for the Southern Water Tribe in it's resistance to occupation by the Northern Water Tribe.  They have just finished filming, and the crew rightly left Bolin suspended above the sound stage while getting lunch.  Asami walks in, finds Bolin, and they chat.  Then Mako comes in with news that freaks them all out- it was Varick's detonator that he found on the scene of the Cultural Center bombing, and the explosions on the ship that was hijacked were just like explosions on one of Varick's 'movers'.  Asami, whose company has just been saved by Varick buying a controlling interest, is skeptical of Mako, reminding Mako that those detonators could have been stolen and used by anyone.  Mako is convinced that Varick helped start the war between Northern and Southern Water Tribes to profit from it.  He already has a shipping company, and now he owns Asami's weapons and planes to profit from.  Too bad he never gets to make the collar:  Varick has a sit-down with Mako to threaten him, Bolin, and Asami if Mako decides to cause any trouble for Varick.  Mako refuses to back down and goes off in search of more evidence.

Tenzin continues to mope about not accessing the Spirit World, but Kya notices something's up with Jinora, talking to somebody no one else can see.  So Kya gets Jinora to confess to Tenzin - she can see spirits, mostly cute ones.  Jinora also tells them that her spirit bunny friends can lead them to somewhere Korra can access the Spirit World.  So off to an old ruin, grown over with vines they go.  They open a door in the paving, and hundreds of tiny, winged dark spirits fly out, buzz around and threaten to cause a lot of trouble.  So Korra practices the spirit-taming techniques Unalaq taught her, and they work to dissipate the dark spirits.  Tenzin is bummed that Unalaq's teaching worked out, but Korra reminds him that Unalaq taught her for his own gain, while Tenzin has always acted for Korra's welfare and future.  While at the ruin, Korra tells the group that she saw Wan, the first Avatar, and Jinora tells Korra she saw his statue come to life and glow on the Winter Solstice.  Korra is stunned - that's the day she opened the Southern Pole portal.

Awesome light show!

Asami shows up at Mako's and they discuss getting back together, now that Mako and Korra have broken up, as well as the case.  Asami thinks the stress of all his life changes is getting to him.  The cops show up, including Chief Beifong, Earth Bender extraordinaire.  They accuse Mako of working with the Triple-Threat Gang to steal Asami's shipments of weapons to the South, and Mako denies this furiously.  He keeps denying it furiously when they find some of the explosives used in the theft.  Mako is taken away while telling a clearly disappointed Asami that he's innocent.

Really, I didn't!

After sharing info on what they know about the first Avatar, Wan, Jinora and Korra decide to meditate together.  Very quickly, they are in a new, brightly colored, beautiful valley.  They stand and wander hand-in-hand through the Spirit World.
